From a Tragic to Resilient Mindset

Do you face challenges at work or in life that derail you from achieving the goals you initially set out to accomplish?

Some of the overwhelming problems could be: tight deadlines or being embarrassed in a meeting by the boss or being excluded from a project team. Do you at times feel like being trapped in a revolving door that you just can't seem to find the exit?

Slow down, relax and reflect. I believe that every one of us has a purpose to achieve something great in life.Everything we experience at work or life happens for a reason. We can learn a lesson from everything.

Some of my self-sabotaging self-talk :

The unfriendly experience of getting into an elevator and greeting a neighbor who ignored you. 

Holding the elevator door for a person who does not appreciate you.

Being penalized by time just because someone hazardously cuts into your lane abruptly causing  you to slow down.

Stuck in an underground parking area unable to find a parking space.

Here is an interesting thought...the neighbor that ignored you has moved on. I am still holding on to the tragic mindset. What could I do to free myself from the prison of suffering?

Let’s examine the 5 H framework as a guide to move from a tragic to resilient mindset.

Happen

The first step is to examine what are some challenging experiences or painful moments that we avoid, ignore or sweep under the carpet. Take a closer look into every situation and circumstances that cause pain and give us a tragic mindset.

Ask uncomfortable, thought provoking questions. Dive deeper and find out the root cause of the challenge. Once we have established the data pain points, move to the next stage.

Hurt

Acknowledge that we are not machines and we are capable of storing and feeling physical, mental and emotional pain. Be mindful and sensitive about our needs. Take time to recover. Give ample space to breathe. Laugh as laughter is a powerful resource to break state and change patterns so that we  overcome challenges and obstacles.

Move away from the path of feeling hopelessness, helplessness and worthlessness. Believe that every experience whether pain or pleasure will make us stronger.What can be learn from the experience?

Re-evaluate and identify the real reason why we feel the pain. Take time to relax and find out any missing information that could help us look at things in a positive light and to laugh at the problems.

Laughter is a powerful tool to distract, release the tension and break the pattern of our current undesirable state.

Humour

At the next stage, we must have the courage to reframe the situation. Reframe and give each experience that we face some new meaning.

When I was young I was disturbed and bullied a lot. Some would say, “Hey FAT boy” and I would cry my way home feeling hurt. Everything changed when my dad shifted my perspective by saying “People can see you easily” and that I am; “Fun, Authentic and Talented”.

I moved away from a tragic mindset to a more comedic mindset - I had the ability to elevate my mood. My personal space was a happier space. I could further change the posture, word pattern, perspective and change my state.

Thus we have to learn to look at the bright-side of a situation. Cultivate the ability to make a joke out of it and to lighten the situation. Learn to laugh at our challenges, trials and tribulations. Poke more fun into the situation to allow us to release the tension. Allow the joy to shine back into the path of alignment and progress. Practice and cultivate a happier, healthier and sustainable culture that allows a shift in perspective. 

Heal

The next stage is to allow the patch up work to take place. A scare is a hurtful reminder. If we shift our perspective, we give new meaning to the word scare and re-label it as S-Care – Systematic Care. A scab is a protective tissue covering that forms after your skin has been damaged.

Make a habit think positive, hang around happy positive people and apply the tools and techniques of reframing in our daily routine. Allow the body to rest and recover overtime.

Let’s put into practice the new behavioral changes. Engage in conversations that motivate and encourage your team mates. Build relationship and trust with friends and family that support you during tough times.Affirm all the right and great practices.

We can learn to nurture self-care and self-lead ourselves.

Happiness

The final stage is to Laugh and Win together. Empower others.Share the technique we learn and find ways to help others. Strive to be in an optimal state of being engage and motivated. Maintain a  positive space.Look forward to possibilities. Set for yourself higher standards and achieve greater positive results

Harvest the seed of happiness and cruise in the freeway of happiness together with your team. Open up conversations and dialogues that are progressive. Remind each other of greater times ahead. Push the team forward and engage in happiness as a team for a better work life balance experience. 

Believe that every one of us has the potential of becoming a better version of ourselves and to constant remember that we have special gifts.   We have to accept failure as life’s learning lessons and to move forward. We have to be engage and  igniting the spark of passion in what they do. 

The power of laughter will motivate and encourage us and we can move forward in adversity. We can set greater standards and being able to push them out of the comfort zone.

We can exceed our personal best if we can invest more time in our focus of moving forward and spend less time on looking back. Let’s bounce back from our setbacks.

We use to associate laughter as a bad thing and would not take anyone seriously if they laugh too much. Anyone who was caught cracking it up or laughing would most certainly have been ostracized but it is really that kind of attitude that enables one to persevere. Due to this perception, many organizations give laughter a lower priority. The danger to this could be the rise of a toxic environment. People getting overstretched with the workload and overstressed. People working in isolation and not opening up to each other. Much is known about laughter and its impact on overall health. Research has long supported the idea that laughter and health are interdependent, and hospitals and nursing homes have begun to include daily and weekly focus on laughter promoting activities. Many hospitals are even offering stand-up comedians and clowns for their patients. But why is laughter important in the workplace? And how can your workspace become more effective with the simple addition of a little fun?

Laughter creates a special bonding. Recall a moment when you were in a public place where you witnessed an amusing incident. During times of unexpected amusement, people who are complete strangers will make eye contact and laugh together. Their conversations suddenly become effortless. Two strangers sharing a moment of humor and fun will demonstrate body language that looks like they have known one another their entire lives. Laughter appears to be a component of the genetic endowment handed down from generations of surviving forefathers.

The genetic endowment is like an inherited rule-book on survival that those before us have learned. These are lessons that survive from the caveman and early explorers who faced harsh survival conditions where only the strongest or most clever survived. The physical changes occurring in their brains from learning survival of the harshest conditions were then passed onto their offspring who in turn provided them to their own offspring. One such bit of genetic “gift” is our innate ability to look at snake eyes and understand if they will kill us. This is a fact no one is ever taught, it is an instinctive reaction to retreat from slatted eyes. Even children as young as two years of age have been shown to shrink away from a large photograph of a poisonous snake. 

Laughter may be another aspect of the genetic endowment. There may be a rulebook similar to survival lessons except these innate rules favor socialization tactics. It is difficult to understand how so many people appear to have the same exact sense of humor as those around them. A stand-up comic will appeal to nearly everyone in the audience or conversely everyone will hate him. It is a rare thing indeed to see a comic that you believe is hilarious as others throw their nose up in the air. So how can laughter contribute to survival and be so important that it gets passed down genetically to your offspring? Benefits of humor and fun have been well-researched.

Survival of the race is the single most powerful force on the planet. Mothers instinctively kill to protect their children, and in truth they would put themselves in harm to protect the child of a stranger. Sex is a very powerful force that needs no further discussion here. The truth is the will to survive coupled with the powerful, immediate bonding of laughter would lead a thoughtful person to assume, laughter is about survival of the species. Add in what we know about the physiological and psychological benefits of humor and fun and assumptions can go further.

Hospitals provide comedy, humor and fun, especially cancer treatment centers for adults and children alike. Without a couple to raise a child, that child’s chances of survival are lowered when living in a single family home. A father traditionally would have been the hunter and the protector. If a wild beast appeared, the father would protect the genetic offspring to ensure survival of his species. The mother too is free to care more specifically for the child if the father provides food and protection. Laughter creates an immediate bond with strangers but more importantly it can establish re-bonding with committed partners. When people laugh, enjoying humor and fun together; and when they are in relationships with family and friends, they survive and that survival includes a higher quality of living.

Because laughter is so important to overall survival, could it be that laughter would help ensure the survival of your company? Through laughter and bonding, powerful work relationships would be formed and their work more effective and efficient. Bringing humor and fun into the workplace will increase productivity. When people laugh together they form a sense of trust. After all, if I believe something is funny and my friend believes the same, then he must be “normal” like I am. 

How can you create laughter in the workplace? Well beyond the obvious of having clowns or comedians disrupting the office, there are other ways to do it. Lighten up on the work environment. An oppressive environment is one in which there is little room for laughter. If you set up friendly competition in the office, then the natural result will be playful laughter among competitors. If you institute lunchtime dance lines or allow workers to hum or listen to music as they work, again, laughter will result. 

Efficiency and quality of work need not be sacrificed for the life sustained sensations of laughter.
